Rodney Pig Loves Odds Farm Park

Odds Farm Park’s mascot Rodney Pig has had a busy year to date. Since arriving at the Farm Park, Rodney Pig has had a great time helping the farmers feed the animals and even helped with Egg Collecting. Rodney is a cheeky little piglet and very friendly.

He loves meeting kids visiting on a day out, as do Odds Farm Parks other Furry Friends. The rabbits in Rabbit World love to be stroked, the ponies adore being patted and the greedy sheep and goats can’t get enough of the yummy food children can hand feed. Currently there are also plenty of goat families with baby kids at this children’s farm….very, very cute!

Chick Chick Chick Chick Chickens

Did you know Odds Farm Park is home to 5 different breeds of chickens? All different colours and sizes, they shouldn’t be missed on a family day out to this children’s farm.

The Buff Orpington Chicken is the rarest breed of chicken at Odds Farm Park. With less than 500 breeding females left, they are classified as ‘Rare’ by the Rare Breed Survival Trust. They date back to 1894, when they were introduced to satisfy the demand for buff coloured birds. With their heavy soft feathers, these already large birds look even bigger, have a soft almost fluffy appearance and a rich golden colour.

Days out at this childrens farm also enables families to see Belgium Barbu D’Uccle Chickens, Light Sussex Chickens, Maran Chickens and Polish Chickens. On a day out with the kids, you can get extremely close to some of our poultry friends in the fun children’s activity, Egg Collecting, plus children can help put the chickens to bed in the daily Eggs & Bacon activity.

Plus, this summer, meet the new baby chicks. Children can watch cute little Buff Orpington and Maran chicks with their mums and dads in the coops next to the Adventure Maze.

Bagot Goat Bumper Week!

The Bagot Goats at Odds Farm Park had a bumper week last week with plenty of new additions to the herd.

Seven year old Desiree gave birth to the first Bagot Goat kid of the year born on Monday 29 June. On Wednesday 1 July five year old Matilda also gave birth to a cute baby boy and Matilda’s sister Milly gave birth to an adorable baby girl on the same day. Delphine, who is also the mother of Matilda and Milly, gave birth herself to boy and girl twins on Thursday 2 July, making her a grandmother and mother in the same week! Plus on Thursday 2 July, seven year old Diantha and Dominica both gave birth to a girl. All the mums are very proud and they are looking after their beautiful new babies really well.

Children can see the Bagot Goats up close as they are kept indoors for a week or so before they go out to play in the fields this summer. We hope to keep one or two of the female kids here at the farm to join our herd.

Bagot Goats are classed as ‘Endangered’ on the Rare Breed Survival Trust Watch List, making them just as rare as the Orangutan or Sumatran Tiger. With less than 200 breeding Bagot Goat nannies left, all of Odds Farm Park’s Bagot Goats are part of an active breeding programme. Having Bagot Goats at this children’s farm, enables kids on a family day out to see these very special and rare goats. Altogether, Odds Farm Park has 7 breeds of goats for children to see around the farm and meet in the fun Goat Show which will be on later in the year. Very entertaining!

“Hey Hey” It’s Time To Make Hay

With the warmer days now here, Odds Farm Park have just undertaken their Hay Harvest, used to feed all the Furry Friends at this childrens farm during winter. Hay is basically long grass that has been cut and dried so it can be stored and then fed to the farm animals in winter when it is too wet and cold for them to be outside.

This year, due to perfect weather conditions, with hot sun and a firm breeze, it took just 3 days to cut the grass in the three Odds Farm Park fields, dry out the leaves and stalks, bale the hay up and cart it into the barns. Considering it usually takes 6 days, this was an excellent result for all at Odds Farm Park! If it rains during the harvest we can risk losing the whole crop, so the quicker the harvest is completed the better.

Modern farming methods also speed up the harvest as the bales used today are much larger, enabling them to be collected and stacked in the barn faster. One big bale equals 12-15 traditional small bales and, due to their weight, they have to be moved by a tractor. For the childrens farm in winter, one or two bales are used each day to feed all the farm animals.

On a family day out at Odds Farm Park, visitors will meet horses, donkeys, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs. In addition to many baby animals to see, there is also a daily programme of hands-on children’s activities, enabling visitors to get really close.
