In preparation for Halloween fun for the whole of October Half Term week, pumpkin carving takes places this weekend at family day out favourite Odds Farm Park!

A much loved event much loved event for those on family days out, children can choose their own pumpkin to carve for just £3 extra charge.  Pumpkin Carving is always popular for everyone at this children’s farm as it enables children on a day out to get their hands dirty scooping out and carving their pumpkins, without making any mess at home!

Families on a day out will be interested to learn that Pumpkin carving being associated with Halloween comes from a method used by the Celts to ward off evil spirits during Samuin – a festival where many Halloween traditions come from.

The Celts would hollow out turnips, then carve faces in them and place candles inside. The turnips were then either placed in the windows, to keep evil spirits from entering a home, or carried around as lanterns. This tradition eventually mixed with the North American tradition of carving pumpkins and around the 19th Century became associated almost exclusively with Halloween.

Elsewhere at Odds Farm Park, people on a day out can expect more exciting activities – board Tractor & Trailer Rides (until the end of October Half Term – weather permitting), race Go Karts and meet the Farmers and hand-feed furry friends in the large Undercover Animal Barns.  Combined with a jam-packed Animal Activity and Demonstration Programme, there’s so much to do!

Family day out favourite, Odds Farm Park is easily reached from Beaconsfield, Amersham, Chesham, Gerrards Cross, High Wycombe, Great Missenden and Wendover. For more information, directions and prices visit the family days out website www.oddsfarm.co.uk
