Ginnie’s Piglets Are Here

Yesterday at award winning farm, Odds Farm Park, Ginnie the Berkshire sow gave birth to an adorable litter of piglets and some visitors were lucky to see them born!  Dad is a Tamworth boar Squidgey and all the livestock team are very happy as this is his first litter as a new dad.

Visitors to the popular children’s farm will be interested to learn that Berkshire Pigs are rrumoured to have been discovered by Oliver Cromwell’s army over 300 years ago. The first recorded pig was a boar called “The Ace of Spades” which was owned by Queen Victoria. The breed has continued to be a firm favourite with the Royal Family, who for years kept a large Berkshire herd at Windsor Castle.

As it’s Spring, visitors to the family farm can expect to meet many more new arrivals!  From more piglets to lambs and kid goats there’s plenty to meet!  Combined with the Daily Animal Activity and Demonstration Programme – including the return of Goat Bottle Feeding, there’s so much to do!

New Arrivals Galore!

Spring is well under way at Odds Farm Park with plenty of new arrivals to meet.  Just in time for Half Term week, children will be pleased to hear that the farmers welcomed triplet lambs on Sunday 8 February and, with plenty more lambs due, visitors on a day out may be lucky and see one born.

Children on a day out will also be delighted to learn that they can meet some adorable Aylesbury Ducklings who have arrived for a holiday at the farm this Half Term!

So Many Animal Activities

Every day in January, whatever the weather at family day out favourite, Odds Farm Park, there are numerous animal based activities for visitors to enjoy.  Supervised by the Livestock team, there are lots of fun Animal Activities and Demonstrations to take part in and watch.  For example, the Piggies Lunch Time activity allows children to meet different breeds of pigs and learn about them before feeding them their tea and with plenty of friendly rabbits to pet, the “Rabbit Time” sessions allow children on a day out to get up close to the long eared residents of the farm.  Children on a day out in January will also love the Meet the Animals Activity and won’t want to miss the chance to Brush the Animals.

Meet Frizzle

Visitors to family day out favourite, Odds Farm Park will be delighted to meet the latest new arrival, Frizzle!  Born at 9.15am on Sunday 14 December to proud parents Edmund and Ivy, Frizzle is a Greyface Dartmoor lamb – a rare breed of sheep.

Children on a day out would recognise the Greyface Dartmoor breed of sheep as they are deep bodied, short legged with very woolly head and legs. They have mottled, spotted black and grey muzzles and produce a heavy fleece of curly lustre wool.

Frizzle is not the only new arrival over the past few days!  On Friday 12 December, Odds Farm Park welcomed Frazzle, a beautiful Jacob Lamb. Born to mum Yogini and dad, Arnie, he is settling in well to life on the farm.

With plenty more newborns due including a litter of piglets, visitors to the farm may be lucky and see a baby born before Christmas!

Say Hello To Henry

Visitors to family day out favourite, Odds Farm Park, will love to meet new arrival, Henry!  Henry is  rare breed Golden Guernsey billy goat who has come from a breeder in Lincolnshire to meet the lady Golden Guernsey nannies at the farm.  He is settling in well and enjoying meeting new friends.

Visitors to the award winning farm will be interested to learn that with between 501-1,000 breeding nannies registered in the UK, the Golden Guernsey Goat is classed as a Minority Breed by the Rare Breed Survival Trust.

The exact origin of the Golden Guernsey is uncertain, though it is believed that they have French, Syrian and Maltese ancestry. They arrived in the UK in 1965 from Guernsey and the first reference to them on The Channel Islands is from an 1826 tourism guide book.

Golden Guernsey Goats are also very quiet, docile and friendly goats for children to meet on a day out.

New Piglets For Kate

Just before October Half Term, staff at Award Winning Children’s Farm, Odds Farm Park have welcomed the arrival of a new litter of piglets!

Born to mum Kate, a Gloucestershire Old Spot sow, and Dad, Humphrey, a Gloucestershire Old Spot boar, the super cute babies are settling in well to life on the farm and children on a day out can see them in the Pig Paddocks near Dipple Field.
