Pumpkin Carving Returns This Weekend

In preparation for stacks of Halloween fun for the whole of October Half Term week, Pumpkin Carving returns to Odds Farm Park this Saturday 3 October!

Taking place every weekend in October and daily during Half Term Week, children can choose their own pumpkin to carve for just £3 extra charge.  Pumpkin Carving is always popular as it enables children on a day out to get their hands dirty scooping out and carving their pumpkins, without making any mess at home!

Families on a day out will be interested to learn that Pumpkin carving being associated with Halloween comes from a method used by the Celts to ward off evil spirits during Samuin – a festival where many Halloween traditions come from.

The Celts would hollow out turnips, then carve faces in them and place candles inside. The turnips were then either placed in the windows, to keep evil spirits from entering a home, or carried around as lanterns. This tradition eventually mixed with the North American tradition of carving pumpkins and around the 19th Century became associated almost exclusively with Halloween.

In addition, every weekend in October an daily during Half Term children on a day can follow the Ghastly Ghost’s Trail to win a treat and brave the Boo Barn…if they dare!

Elsewhere at Odds Farm Park, expect more exciting Autumn activities – board Tractor & Trailer Rides+, race Go Karts and meet cute furry friends in the large Undercover Animal Barns.  Combined with a jam-packed Animal Activity and Demonstration Programme and Giant Indoor Playbarn, there’s so much to do!

Ginnie Has Her Piglets

Great news! Odds Farm Park’s adorable Berkshire sow Ginnie has given birth to a cheeky litter of piglets! Dad is a Tamworth boar named Squidgey and both parents are of course very proud. Born on Monday, the new arrivals are settling in well to life in the Pig Paddocks.

Berkshire Pigs are rumoured to have been discovered by Oliver Cromwell’s army over 300 years ago. The first recorded pig was a boar called “The Ace of Spades” which was owned by Queen Victoria. The breed has continued to be a firm favourite with the Royal Family, who for years kept a large Berkshire herd at Windsor Castle.

Visitors to the award-winning children’s farm will also be interested to learn that Tamworth pigs were first bred in the Midlands in the UK, originating from crossing imported pigs such as the Red Barbadan or Axford.  Click Here to find out more about the Pigs at Odds Farm Park.

Elsewhere on a day out this September at Odds Farm Park, families can expect more exciting activities – win a Medal at Sheep Racing,* board Tractor and Trailer Rides,* explore the Sand & Water Play Area and meet more Furry Friends in the large Undercover Animal Barns and Outdoor Paddocks.  Combined with a jam-packed Animal Activity and Demonstration Programme and the Giant Indoor Playbarn, including a special Toddler and Under 5’s areas, there’s so much to do!

Introducing Maximus

A new arrival awaits visitors on a day out to Odds Farm Park as staff at the popular visitor attraction recently welcomed the arrival of Anglo Nubian billy goat, Maximus!

Born in February, Maximus has recently relocated to Odds Farm Park and is settling in well in one of the paddocks,!  Very friendly and extremely handsome, he will be ready to be introduced to the “ladies” in the Autumn!

The Anglo Nubian Goat was created in the UK at the end of the Nineteenth Century. It was developed by crossing goats in England with those arriving on Ocean Liners from the East; the goats were used to provide fresh milk during the voyage.

On a day out to Odds Farm Park, children can identify the Anglo Nubian Goat by their height (they are one of the tallest breeds of goat) and their long pendular ears. Many colour combinations are found which give some Anglo Nubian Goats very attractive mottled, marbled and tortoiseshell coats.

Elsewhere at Odds Farm Park, families on a day out can meet even more furry friends and even get close up to them in the Designated Animal Feeding Area.   Combined with a jam-packed Animal Activity and Demonstration Programme, there’s so much to do!

Odds Farm Park is an award winning children’s farm providing an ideal family day out and is easily reached from North London, West London, London and Buckinghamshire. To visit the family days out website, visit www.oddsfarm.co.uk
