Testimonial

“Thank you for our trip to Odds farm! We really enjoyed it and it was lots of fun! I loved it when we got to feed the pigs during piggy tea time. We also loved playing in the soft play, especially on the swinging ropes. We learnt so much from the Cow Show as we did not know how a cow was milked and where the milk came from! We give the trip 10/10!”

Nursery Farm Visits and EYFS

Understanding the world

For our youngest visitors, you can focus on the Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning by encouraging active exploration.

  • The natural world: Pupils can make direct observations of animals, describing what they see, hear, and feel.

  • Life cycles: At various times of year, pupils can meet our kid goats, calves, chicks and lambs, and they can begin to understand the concept of growth and change over time.

  • Communication and language: We introduce a wealth of specialist vocabulary (such as fleece, udder, trough, and snout) to help pupils articulate their findings.

Key Stage 1:

Animals, including humans

A visit to Odds Farm Park directly meets several statutory requirements for Years 1 and 2:

  • Identification and classification (Year 1): Pupils can identify and name a variety of common animals including birds and mammals. You can focus on the observable differences between these groups, such as those that have feathers vs. those that have fur or hair.

  • Living things and their habitats (Year 2): Students explore how our farm provides for the basic needs of different animals and identify why certain animals are suited to specific habitats (e.g. the paddocks for sheep).

  • Structure and comparison: By observing animals at close range, pupils can ‘describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals.’ Children will be able to see different body parts, such as wings, snouts, beaks, hooves and horns, and discuss how these help the animals in their daily lives.

Lower Key Stage 2:

Life cycles and environment

For Years 3 and 4, we provide the perfect field trip to transition from observation to scientific reasoning:

  • Animals and nutrition (Year 3): We provide various animal feeding activities which provide you with an opportunity to discuss how different farm animals cannot make their own food and require specific nutrition to stay healthy.

  • Living things and life cycles (Year 4/5):  Our animals can be used to provide a clear, real-world look at the differences in life cycles between mammals (like our cows) and birds (our chickens), including the process of reproduction.

  • Classification keys: Students can work scientifically by using our livestock to create and test classification keys based on observable physical traits.

Meet our Farmers & rare breeds

Many children will be seeing, smelling and hearing farm animals for the first time – an experience we all want them to have in a safe and secure environment.

As a registered Rare Breeds Centre, children can see British farm animals as rare as China’s Giant Panda and with our active breeding programme, there are always plenty of young animals to see.

Odds Farm Park was the first Children’s Farm to offer a designated Hands On Animal Area where you can get really close to our furry friends.

The Hands On Area is open all day long and permanently manned by our Farmers to help you get the most from your time with the animals. With plenty of extra hand-washing facilities, you can be assured that your health and safety is of the utmost importance to us.
