Family day out favourite, Odds Farm Park were delighted when a VIP visitor paid a special visit to the children’s farm with their Olympic Torch! Staff at the farm were ecstatic that they were able to have their photograph taken with the Olympic Torch which was used as part of the Relay before the Olympic Games.
Visitors to the farm will be interested to learn the history of the tradition of the Olympic Torch.
The Torch and Relay were important elements of the cultural festivals surrounding the Olympic Games of Ancient Greece. During the Games, a sacred flame burned continually on the altar of the goddess, Hera. In addition, heralds were summoned to travel throughout Greece to announce the Games, declaring a sacred truce for the duration.
A very precise ritual for the lighting of the Flame is now followed at every Games. It is lit from the sun’s rays at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, in a traditional ceremony among the ruins of the home of the ancient Games.
After a short relay around Greece, the Flame is handed over to the new Host City at another ceremony in the Panathenaiko stadium in Athens.
The Flame is then delivered to the Host Country, where it is transferred from one Torchbearer to another, spreading the message of peace, unity and friendship. It ends its journey as the last Torchbearer lights the cauldron at the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony in the Olympic Stadium, marking the official start of the Games.
The Flame is extinguished on the final day of the Games, at the Closing Ceremony.

A new arrival awaits visitors on a day out to Odds Farm Park as staff at the popular visitor attraction recently welcomed the arrival of Anglo Nubian billy goat, Maximus!
Born in February, Maximus has recently relocated to Odds Farm Park and is settling in well in one of the paddocks,! Â Very friendly and extremely handsome, he will be ready to be introduced to the “ladies” in the Autumn!
The Anglo Nubian Goat was created in the UK at the end of the Nineteenth Century. It was developed by crossing goats in England with those arriving on Ocean Liners from the East; the goats were used to provide fresh milk during the voyage.
On a day out to Odds Farm Park, children can identify the Anglo Nubian Goat by their height (they are one of the tallest breeds of goat) and their long pendular ears. Many colour combinations are found which give some Anglo Nubian Goats very attractive mottled, marbled and tortoiseshell coats.
Elsewhere at Odds Farm Park, families on a day out can meet even more furry friends and even get close up to them in the Designated Animal Feeding Area.  Combined with a jam-packed Animal Activity and Demonstration Programme, there’s so much to do!
Odds Farm Park is an award winning children’s farm providing an ideal family day out and is easily reached from North London, West London, London and Buckinghamshire. To visit the family days out website, visit www.oddsfarm.co.uk
Cow Milking is back at Odds Farm Park. Proving milk doesn’t come from the supermarket, this fun to watch demonstration uses modern cow milking methods and enables children to meet and pat Blossom, Odds Farm Park’s friendly Jersey Cow.
